Ocean freight into Jebel Ali and Dubai Port held roughly flat through July 2026, which is welcome stability after a volatile first half. Indicative port-to-port rates:

If you are VAT-registered in the UAE, import VAT is generally recoverable through your return, so treat it as cash flow rather than pure cost. Duty is not recoverable. - Compare landed, not freight. Ask every forwarder for one number covering origin charges, ocean, destination handling, clearance, duty, VAT and delivery.
- Pick your Incoterm deliberately. Under EXW you control the freight and usually pay less; under DDP your supplier controls it and builds in margin. Under FOB you take over at the Chinese port, which is the sensible middle ground for most importers.
- Consolidate suppliers into one container. Three suppliers in the same province can often ship as one FCL instead of three LCL bookings.
- Book 3–4 weeks ahead. Spot bookings inside two weeks pay a premium, especially before Chinese New Year and Golden Week.
- Get HS codes right before shipping. A reclassification at Jebel Ali costs storage, amendment fees and days.
- Use a free zone if you re-export. Duty deferral on goods that never enter the mainland is straightforward money saved.
