What a Container to Dubai Costs in 2026

Ocean freight on a container to Dubai moves weekly. The ranges below are indicative for late 2026 into Jebel Ali and exist so you can sanity-check a quote, not book from a table. Rerouting around the Strait of Hormuz has kept surcharges unusually volatile this year, so anything older than a week is stale.

Ocean freight only. Excludes origin charges, UAE customs duty and VAT, destination handling, port storage and delivery. Reefer, dangerous goods and out-of-gauge cargo price separately.

What is not in that number

A container to Dubai quoted at $600 and a container to Dubai quoted at $1,400 are often the same shipment priced differently. This is where importers get caught, so ask for both an all-in figure and a port-to-port figure before comparing anyone:

  • Origin charges — terminal handling, export clearance, documentation at the load port. Frequently excluded from the cheap quote.
  • Destination handling at Jebel Ali — terminal handling charge, documentation, delivery order. Unavoidable.
  • Customs duty and VAT — 5% duty on CIF value for most goods, plus 5% VAT. Some categories differ.
  • Free time and demurrage — usually 5 to 10 free days. After that the daily charge climbs fast, and this is the single most common surprise cost.
  • Inland delivery — Jebel Ali to your door in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or across the border.

Choosing

Full Container or Shared?

You do not always need a whole container to Dubai. The switch point is usually around 13 to 15 cubic metres, below which LCL is cheaper and above which a 20ft container to Dubai wins on both cost and handling risk.

FCL (full container)LCL (shared)
Best forAbove roughly 15 CBM1 to 15 CBM
Priced onThe box, however fullPer CBM or per tonne, whichever is higher
TransitFaster, no consolidation waitAdd 5 to 12 days for consolidation and deconsolidation
Damage riskLower, cargo is not rehandledHigher, the box is opened and restuffed
Destination chargesPredictableOften higher per CBM than expected

A 20ft container holds roughly 28 to 30 CBM of usable space and takes about 28 tonnes of payload. A 40ft high cube holds about 65 to 68 CBM. If your cargo is dense, such as tiles, machinery or metals, you will hit the weight limit long before the volume limit, and a 20ft container to Dubai is the right box even though it looks half empty.

The process

How a Container to Dubai Actually Moves

Eight stages take a container to Dubai from booking to delivery. Most delays happen at stages 2, 6 and 7, and almost all of them are documentation problems rather than shipping problems.

01

Booking & rate confirmation

Origin, destination, commodity, weight and volume, plus the date cargo is ready. The rate is fixed against a specific sailing, not indefinitely.

02

Export clearance at origin

Invoice, packing list and any licences. A mismatch between invoice and packing list stops the box before it ever sails.

03

Stuffing & container release

The empty box is released, loaded and sealed. Seal number goes on the bill of lading and must match on arrival.

04

Loading & bill of lading

Cargo is loaded before the cut-off, which is usually two to four days before departure. The bill of lading is issued after sailing.

05

Ocean transit

Direct or via transhipment. Transhipment adds time and one more point where a container can roll to the next vessel.

06

Arrival & manifest at Jebel Ali

The carrier files the manifest. Your delivery order is released once freight and charges are settled.

07

UAE customs clearance

Declaration through Dubai Customs, duty and VAT paid, inspection if selected. Clean paperwork clears in a day; unclear HS codes take a week.

08

Delivery & empty return

Trucked to your warehouse, unloaded, and the empty box returned before free time expires.

Paperwork

Documents You Must Have

  • Commercial invoice — with correct HS codes and a value that matches what you actually paid. UAE customs values duty on CIF.
  • Packing list — must agree with the invoice on carton count, gross and net weight. This is the most common mismatch we see.
  • Bill of lading — original or telex release, with consignee and notify party correct. A wrong consignee is expensive to amend after arrival.
  • Certificate of origin — required for many goods, and essential if you want preferential duty under a trade agreement such as CEPA with India.
  • Import code — the consignee needs a valid Dubai Customs importer code. Get this before the container to Dubai sails, not after it lands.
  • Material safety data sheet — for anything classified as dangerous goods, with IMDG class confirmed by the carrier before booking.

The mistake that costs the most

Free time at Jebel Ali is typically 5 to 10 days. Importers routinely assume clearance will take two days, discover the HS code is being queried, and pay demurrage and port storage on a container to Dubai that is sitting still. Have documents checked before the vessel arrives, not when it docks. It is free to do early and expensive to do late.

Ports

Jebel Ali, or Somewhere Else?

Jebel Ali handles the overwhelming majority of container to Dubai traffic, and for most importers it is simply the right answer: the most services, the most frequent sailings and the deepest trucking market. But it is not the only option, and in 2026 that has mattered more than usual.

Common questions

Shipping a Container to Dubai

How much does it cost to ship a container to Dubai?

A container to Dubai runs between roughly $400 and $4,200 for a 20ft box depending entirely on origin. India and Pakistan sit at the bottom of that range, China in the middle at $850 to $1,800, and the US East Coast at the top. Those are ocean freight figures and exclude origin charges, UAE duty and VAT, destination handling and delivery.

How long does a container take to reach Dubai?

Three to seven days from Karachi or Mundra, nine to fifteen from Singapore, sixteen to twenty-six from China, twenty-two to thirty-four from North Europe, and up to forty-two from the US East Coast. Add three to ten days for clearance at Jebel Ali depending on how clean the documentation is.

What duty do I pay on a container to Dubai?

Most goods attract 5% customs duty calculated on the CIF value, plus 5% VAT. Some categories differ, and goods entering a free zone for re-export are treated differently again. Confirm the HS code before shipping, because a disputed classification is the most common cause of clearance delay.

Should I ship FCL or LCL?

Below about 15 CBM, LCL is usually cheaper. Above that, a full 20ft container to Dubai wins on cost, transit time and damage risk, because the cargo is not opened and restuffed at a consolidation warehouse. If your cargo is dense, weight will decide before volume does.

What is free time at Jebel Ali?

Typically 5 to 10 days depending on the carrier and your agreement, counted from discharge. After that demurrage runs daily on the container and storage runs on the cargo. Both climb quickly, so plan clearance to finish well inside free time.

Can you clear a container another forwarder shipped?

Yes. Customs clearance, port handling, storage and inland delivery are all available as standalone services for a container to Dubai that someone else moved. This is a normal booking for us and does not require you to move the rest of your freight.

Do I need a company to import into Dubai?

For commercial quantities, yes. The consignee needs a valid trade licence and a Dubai Customs importer code. Personal effects and small shipments follow a different route with their own limits, and we can tell you which one applies before you ship.

What happens if my container is selected for inspection?

It is moved to the inspection area, opened and checked against the declaration. This adds two to five days typically. Accurate invoices, packing lists and HS codes are the only reliable way to keep an inspection short.
