Air freight from Dubai has gone from a premium option to a serious plan B for a lot of shippers this month. With the Strait of Hormuz back under closure conditions since 14 July and ocean rates climbing on the long-haul lanes, the gap between flying and sailing has narrowed — and for some cargo it has closed entirely.
That does not mean air is suddenly cheap. It means the comparison is worth running properly instead of assuming sea always wins. This guide gives you real 2026 rates per kg by route, explains the chargeable weight rule that catches most first-time shippers, and shows where air freight from Dubai genuinely pays for itself.
DXB and DWC together give the UAE one of the densest cargo networks in the world. Used well, that is a real advantage. Used carelessly, it is an expensive invoice.

What Air Freight from Dubai Costs in 2026
General cargo out of Dubai typically runs AED 12 to AED 40 per kg depending on route, urgency and how much volume you move. Non-urgent general cargo on high-density lanes sits at the bottom of that band, around AED 12 to AED 18 per kg.
In dollars, by destination:
| Destination | Rate per Kg | Typical Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai → India | $1.20 – $2.50 | 1 – 2 days |
| Dubai → China | $2.20 – $3.80 | 2 – 3 days |
| Dubai → UK | $2.80 – $4.50 | 2 – 4 days |
| Dubai → Australia | $3.00 – $5.00 | 3 – 5 days |
| Dubai → USA | $3.50 – $5.80 | 3 – 5 days |
Two rules apply almost everywhere. There is a minimum chargeable weight of around 45 kg, so a 12 kg parcel is billed as 45 kg. And express or priority handling adds 25% to 40% on top of the standard rate.
Chargeable Weight: The Rule That Surprises People
Airlines do not bill on what your shipment weighs. They bill on whichever is higher — actual weight or volumetric weight. The standard air formula is:
Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 6000 = volumetric weight in kg
Take a carton measuring 100 × 80 × 60 cm that weighs 45 kg. Volumetric weight is 480,000 ÷ 6000 = 80 kg. You are billed on 80 kg, not 45 kg. At $3.00 per kg that is $240 instead of $135.
This is why light bulky cargo — foam, packaging, empty enclosures, garments on hangers — is disproportionately expensive to fly, and why cutting 5 cm off a carton height sometimes saves more than negotiating the rate. Always send dimensions with your enquiry. A quote given without them is a guess.
The Surcharges That Change Your Final Bill
- Fuel surcharge (FSC) — currently adding roughly $0.80 to $1.40 per kg on most routes, and rising when oil moves.
- Security surcharge — a fixed per-kg screening charge.
- Terminal handling at origin — charged at the Dubai cargo village.
- Airline documentation / AWB fee — flat per shipment.
- Dangerous goods handling — substantial, and requires a DG declaration and certified packing.
- Destination charges — import handling, customs and delivery at the far end.
A base rate of $2.50 per kg can land near $4.00 once these are added. When you compare offers, insist on the all-in number, exactly as you would with ocean.
Transit Times and What Next Flight Out Really Means
Published transit times assume your cargo is ready, documented and delivered to the terminal before cut-off. Three services exist in practice:
- Next flight out (NFO): the fastest and dearest — the shipment travels on the first available flight, often same day within the region.
- Standard airport-to-airport: the rates above; consolidated, moves within 24–72 hours of acceptance.
- Deferred air: discounted, moves on space-available basis, adds 2–4 days. Useful when air is chosen for reliability rather than pure speed.
Add roughly a day at each end for handling and customs. A three-day flight to the US East Coast is realistically five days door to door.
When Air Freight from Dubai Beats Sea
Air is usually 8 to 12 times the ocean rate per kg. It still wins in five specific situations:
- High value-to-weight cargo. Electronics, pharmaceuticals, instruments and spare parts. When the goods are worth $200 per kg, a $4 freight rate is 2% of value.
- The cost of being late exceeds the freight premium. A stopped production line or a missed retail window costs more in a day than the whole air bill.
- Ocean transit has become unpredictable. This is the live issue right now — see our Strait of Hormuz closure update. When sea schedules slip by two weeks, the planning value of a fixed air date is real.
- Small volumes. Under about 200 kg, LCL surcharges and handling narrow the gap considerably.
- Perishables and temperature-controlled cargo. Where shelf life makes the decision for you.
A practical middle path is splitting the shipment: fly what you need in the next three weeks, sail the rest. You keep sales moving without paying air rates on your whole order. Our sea vs air comparison works through the crossover point.
6 Ways to Cut Your Air Freight Cost
- Repack before you quote. Reducing volumetric weight is usually the single biggest lever — larger lever than the rate itself.
- Send exact dimensions upfront. Accurate quotes prevent reweigh charges at the terminal, which are billed at the worst rate.
- Use deferred air where the deadline allows. Two extra days often buys a meaningful discount.
- Consolidate shipments. Three 60 kg consignments in one week should be one booking, not three minimums.
- Book off the peak days. Rates and space tighten around weekend departures on popular lanes.
- Prepare DG paperwork in advance. A rejected DG shipment at the terminal costs storage, rebooking and the flight you needed.
Air Freight from Dubai — Frequently Asked Questions
How much does air freight from Dubai cost per kg?
Roughly AED 12 to AED 40 per kg depending on route and urgency. In dollars, expect $1.20–$2.50 to India, $2.80–$4.50 to the UK and $3.50–$5.80 to the USA, before fuel and security surcharges.
How is chargeable weight calculated for air cargo?
Length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6000 gives volumetric weight. You are billed on whichever is higher, volumetric or actual. Light bulky cargo is therefore billed well above its real weight.
What is the minimum charge for air freight from Dubai?
Most carriers apply a minimum chargeable weight of around 45 kg, so smaller shipments are billed at that floor regardless of actual weight.
Is air freight worth it with ocean rates so high?
More often than it was six months ago. Air is still several times the ocean rate per kg, but with sea schedules unreliable and surcharges stacking, the effective gap on urgent or high-value cargo has narrowed. Run the comparison on landed cost and lateness risk, not rate alone.
Can you handle dangerous goods by air?
Yes, subject to IATA classification, correct packing and a DG declaration. Tell us the UN number and class at enquiry stage so we book the right service first time.
